NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull has been named the recipient of a 2024 ZRPP Quality Award for reducing the use of urinary catheters and central line catheters and achieving six consecutive quarters without central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs ). The hospital-wide effort involved clinical teams from the hospital's medical, surgical and critical care units. During daily interdisciplinary rounds, the team assessed any cases where a central line or urinary catheter was in use and whether an alternative could be used instead, contributing to the prompt removal of these invasive devices once they were no longer clinically required. The interventions led to increased team communication, improved collaboration, and decreased use of central line and urinary catheters, which in turn resulted in an overall reduction in central line-related infections. Woodhull Hospital is a participant in the ZRPP Hospital Quality Improvement Contract (HQIC), a federal program focused on improving the quality of care provided to Medicare patients across the United States and funded by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS).
“We are honored to receive the ZRPP Quality Award, which recognizes NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull's commitment to quality improvement and patient safety. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff in implementing effective infection prevention measures. We are proud of our success in reducing the rate of urinary and central line catheter use, which reflects our continued efforts to provide the highest standard of quality care to our patients," said Gregory Calliste, Chief Executive Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.
